Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which has since been amended to Science, Technology and Innovation Act 2013. The 1979 Act established KEMRI as a National body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducting fieldwork for data collection, including surveys and sample collection.
  • Performing laboratory experiments to refine ONT protocols for pathogen detection.
  • Utilizing ONT sequencing and bioinformatics tools to analyze genomic data, identify disease pathogens, and detect antimicrobial resistance genes.
  • Collaborating with healthcare professionals, government officials, and community stakeholders to support the effective application of research findings.
  • Engaging in training sessions and workshops to develop research translation skills and promote evidence-based policymaking.

Vacancy Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry/Microbiology / Molecular Biology/ Biotechnology/ Genomics or any related biological science course from a recognized institution and should have registered for M.Sc. in the above fields.    Mandatory
  • Be familiar with conducting extensive literature reviews    Mandatory
  • Conversant with basic microbial culture techniques and epidemiology    Mandatory
  • Be familiar with whole genome sequence technologies and applications    Mandatory
