Laboratory Analyst - Kericho at Kenya Medical Research - KEMRI

Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which has since been amended to Science, Technology and Innovation Act 2013. The 1979 Act established KEMRI as a National body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect, receive and process patient specimens including, but not limited to, blood, urine, respiratory and wound swab cultures.
  • Prepare media, solutions and reagents in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • Perform basic microbiology and molecular techniques including general microscopy, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, conventional and real­ time PCR.
  • Oversee data and specimen process management by ensuring quality of research data entry in worksheets and notebooks, freezer inventories and electronic databases.
  • Operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, Class II Biological Safety Cabinets, analytical balances and autoclave.
  • Perform daily maintenance and make minor adjustments and calibrations to equipment.
  • Package and ship isolates to and from partner laboratories.
  • Order, receive and store study supplies and maintain supply inventories.
  • Prepare reports, write standard operating procedures and communicate effectively with supervisors and other staff.
  • Manage data inputs in project databases and perform basic data analysis.
  • Participate and assist in QA/QC, safety, competency and proficiency testing programs.
  • Train student interns and staff and/or scientists where applicable.
  • Comply with all relevant safety, hygiene and infection control policies.
  • Be prepared to work on weekends and long hours if necessary.
  • Any other duties as allocated by the Laboratory Manager, Project Manager or Principal Investigator (Pl).

Vacancy Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science or Higher Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences or equivalent with a concentration in Clinical Bacteriology/Microbiology, and/or Parasitology,    Mandatory
  • Registered with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board,    Mandatory
  • The applicant must have good knowledge of laboratory operations and procedures and should be able to execute duties and responsibilities with minimum supervision,    Mandatory
  • Computer skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.    Mandatory
