Scope of Work & Deliverables

  • The project is planned to start in October 2025 and should run for 6-7 months. The scope of work entails the following the aspects:
  • Comparative Assessment
  • Identify and describe at least three promising business models for the collection of predominantly lithium-ion batteries.
  • Assess each model’s relevance to Kenya’s regulatory context, infrastructure, and user base.
  • Explore incentives and pricing structures to drive sustainable battery return behaviours.
  • Pilot Implementation
  • Operate pilots in Nairobi as a case study for dense urban zones and informal settlements.
  • Set up physical or mobile collection points, engage local actors (e.g., vendors, boda boda operators, youth groups), and integrate formal sector contributors.
  • Report Development
  • Design a simple framework to track volumes collected, return rates, stakeholder engagement, logistical and any other costs, and further KPIs.
  • Summarize findings, learnings, challenges, and recommendations for the ecosystem.

Applicants Profile

  • Siemens Stiftung is looking for enterprises’ operating in the e-mobility ecosystem in Kenya.
  • The candidates must demonstrate market experience and must comply with the following criteria
  • Candidates are operative in any battery, or waste recycling value chain.
  • Candidates need to be registered as a Kenyan entity.
  • Capacities in processing battery cells are a strong benefit (testing, developing 2nd life applications, shredding).
  • Strong networks or partnerships in Kenya’s e-mobility or circular economy sectors.
  • Positive impact of the company is part of the applying candidates’ identity, e.g. proven through statutes or company reports.
  • Candidates with pending litigation against them or members of their management team, candidates looking for refinancing opportunities or debt or other liabilities are excluded from the application process.
  • Female-led companies as well as companies operating in underserved areas and working with marginalized target groups as well as with high environmental impact are especially encouraged to apply
