Overall purpose of the role:
The NRG Coordinator implements the decisions and activities of NRG members for a more coordinated, evidenced, and transparent refugee response in Kenya. The Coordinator will support in external engagement with the government, UN, and donors under the guidance of the NRG Steering Committee and Chairs. Other workstreams will include information gathering and analysis, management of NRG coordination meetings, and development of strategic documents for internal and external purposes. The role is an exciting opportunity to be involved in policy formulation, refugee regulation reviews, and new initiatives that seek to find development solutions to humanitarian problems. The role is well suited to a diplomatic, analytical, and collegial professional who enjoys working in multi-stakeholder environments and toward consensus. In 2024, the NRG will focus on four themes including: 1. Sharika Plan realisation. 2. Refugee programme funding analysis. 3. Climate action in refugee response. 4. Private, public partnerships in refugee response. The Coordinator needs to be self-motivated but will also receive guidance on where to focus their time and energy.
Duties and Responsibilities:
R1. Coordination, Advocacy and Communication:
- Supports the activities of the NRG and its members externally at key stakeholder meetings, including with the UN and the Government of Kenya
- Ensuring that all relevant parties are kept informed of NRG activities
- Regularly engaging with and meet key stakeholders within the Government of Kenya, including DRS.
- Developing active networking and partnership building with refugee-led organizations.
- Facilitating the development of NRG governance and strategy documents, including an advocacy strategy
- Networking and conducting outreach to key stakeholders to the benefits of the NRG
- Supporting the production of advocacy and communications products, including authoring briefings, letters and talking points ahead of key advocacy moments.
- Supporting the development of common positioning on key policy, operational and funding issues, through providing members with the most updated information gathered from meetings with various stakeholders, sectors and working groups.
- Liaising with Regional Durable Solutions Secretariat (ReDSS) to align the advocacy of the NRG with their ongoing work.
- Briefing the NRG on progress in relation to advocacy topics on at least a monthly basis. Convening additional meetings of interested members of the NRWG on specific advocacy topics as appropriate.
- Establish a criterion of membership to the group for civil society organizations including Refugee Led Organizations.
R2. Internal Coordination:
- Scheduling and facilitating NRG general meetings and sub-working group meetings.
- In coordination with the Steering Committee, streamlining communication and ensuring that key documents, minutes etc. are shared with the NRG membership as appropriate.
- Providing an accessible first point of contact for general inquiries regarding the NRWG and its work.
- Maintaining membership lists and databases.
- Advising the Steering committee on Membership issues and other matters regarding the structure of the NRG.
- Preparing a workplan to be approved by Steering committee.
- Implementing of the workplan and agreeing on modifications with the Steering committee
R3. Strategy, policy, and analysis:
- Coordinating reviews of key government policies and facilitating feedback and support to relevant government departments.
- Gathering information from NRG members on thematic areas and providing analysis for action plans and coordination internally and externally.
- Holding consultations on key thematic areas outlined by NRG members and developing actions plans for deliverables attached to them.
- Developing pro-forma documents for rapid information and data collection during emergencies – providing analysis and reports during emergencies such as drought and flooding.
Experience & Core competencies:
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in the international humanitarian aid with at least two years’ experience in a coordination role
- A degree in a related field, such as international relations, migration, human rights, law, or social sciences;
- Substantial experience in Coordination and advocacy with senior-level UN and Government stakeholders
- Demonstrated experience in developing active networking and partnership building with refugee-led organizations.
- Robust analytical and strategic planning skills;
- Experience in development of governance and advocacy strategy documents on Refugee response
- Demonstrable track record of meeting or exceeding program targets, whilst maintaining technical quality;
- Highly diplomatic with excellent political awareness and understanding;
- High-level communications and interpersonal skills;
- Comfortable with basic data collection and analysis and synthesizing it in to reports and advocacy.
Education:
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in law, social sciences, international development, or other relevant field.
Languages:
- English (excellent – spoken and written)
- Swahili (fluent – spoken and written)
