ROLE SUMMARY
- The ECDE Teacher plays a critical role in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young children by providing quality early childhood education and care within a safe, nurturing, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment. The teacher supports the holistic development and well-being of every child, including cognitive, physical, emotional, social, and moral development, through age- appropriate, developmentally responsive activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES
- The ECD & DCC Teacher is responsible for promoting the safety, well-being, development, and rights of children through quality early learning and care services.
- Child Safeguarding and Welfare
- Safeguard children at all times and act in the best interests of the child.
- Identify, document, and report any signs or concerns of child abuse, neglect, exploitation, or violence in accordance with safeguarding policies.
- Report any child welfare cases promptly to the Welfare & Safeguarding Assistant or relevant authority.
- Maintain confidentiality and ethical handling of all child-related information.
- Promote children's rights, dignity, and protection in daily practice.
- Contribute to emergency preparedness and response measures to ensure child safety.
- Teaching, Learning, and Development
- Deliver age-appropriate learning experiences in line with the approved ECDE syllabus and curriculum
- Organize structured and unstructured activities that encourage curiosity, creativity, exploration, and learning about the world. Support holistic child development, including cognitive, physical, emotional, social, and moral growth.
- Foster school readiness skills such as independence, communication, cooperation, and positive learning attitudes.
- Observe children for developmental emotional, or behavioral concerns and refer them appropriately.
- Support children with special needs or disabilities and coordinate referrals where required.
- Health, Hygiene, and Nutrition
- Maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness within the ECDE/DCC premises.
- Attend to children's personal hygiene, including diaper changing, washing hands, and changing soiled clothing. Ensure safe, clean, and child-friendly environments by removing hazards and organizing equipment properly.
- Encourage healthy eating habits and support feeding routines in line with child health guidelines. Supervision and Daily Care
- Supervise and monitor children at all times to ensure their safety and well-being.
- Develop and follow daily schedules and routines that balance learning play, rest, and physical activity.
- Provide emotional comfort, reassurance, and psychosocial support to help children feel safe and secure.
- Use positive, non-violent behavior guidance strategies that respect children's dignity.
- Monitoring. Documentation, and Reporting
- Observe and document children's progress, routines, interests, and developmental milestones.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in line with institutional requirements.
- Share relevant observations with parents/guardians in a respectful and constructive manner.
- Family and Community Engagement
- Build welcoming, respectful and supportive relationships with families.
- Encourage parent and caregiver involvement in the child's learning and well-being.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding children's progress, needs, and concerns.
- Governance, Collaboration, and Professional Conduct
- Serve as a member of the ECDE governance committee and present concerns, recommendations, and feedback. Collaborate with welfare, health, nutrition, and psychosocial support teams to ensure comprehensive childcare.
- Model positive values, respectful behavior, and appropriate language at all times.
- Participate in continuous professional development to strengthen skills in early childhood education, safeguarding, and child development.
- Advocate for inclusive, safe, and child-friendly learning environments and adequate resourcesAny other assigned roles and responsibilities by the Line Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Certificate in ECDE from a recognized institution will be an added advantage.
- Previous Experience in a similar comparable position is highly desirable.
- Should be a person who has genuine concern/ interest for the well-being of children.
- Should have a valid certificate of good conduct.
- First aid certificate shall be an added advantage.
- Should have the ability to form warm, responsive relationships with children, parents and other stakeholders.
- A person who has a warm, positive, friendly attitude.
- Good interpersonal skills.
